CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Once I’d explained to Emerald how Victoria had been killed, we tried to think of how Mo Henshaw could have gotten hold of bee venom. We had plenty of theories, but since nothing could be proven—the police had already tried that, unsuccessfully—we soon realized our speculations were a waste of time.

"Jamie wanted me to keep my ears open, but really, how do you get on that subject?” Frustration was clear in my voice. "I mean, how often do you talk about your favorite brand of honey or anything like that?” I sighed. "Nobody’s mentioned beekeeping as a hobby—that would have been obvious. Besides, with everything up in the air and no decisions made about the production, I haven’t even had a chance to meet with the Cirencester Curtain Callers. Other than my chat with Sir Richard yesterday morning. Bees didn’t come up in that conversation. I hate to say it, because it means relying on DI Farrow, but if anyone’s going to figure out the connection, it’ll probably be the police. They found out about Mo’s semaglutide purchase. I still think she could’ve bought bee venom too. Maybe it’s available through illegal online pharmacies?”

Emerald looked unconvinced. "Like Jamie said, their forensic accountant probably would’ve uncovered that. What I find more intriguing is the sudden windfall. Where did the money come from?”

"Maybe an inheritance?” I mused, thinking of my own stroke of luck. "Oh, no, wait—there would be paperwork. Same if she’d won it—unless she got it through illegal gambling.” I shook my head. "That seems out of character, though, especially since she’s never had much and lived so frugally.”

We agreed we’d have to let the police figure that part out.

"It would be nice to find Victoria’s killer and put an end to the rumors that way,” I said. "But let’s face it—we’re hardly qualified. Look how well we did last time,” I added drily. "And who knows—even if the killer gets arrested, people might still believe the curse is to blame for the whole thing.”

I patted the bit of space left on the couch for Emerald to join me, bumping into the stack of archive albums as I moved over, spilling a bit of coffee on my jeans.

"Weren’t you already taking care of that?” Emerald asked.

"Hmm?” I looked up from rubbing at the stain, quickly giving up. Considering everything else going on, I didn’t really care about clean pants.

"All of this,” Emerald said, gesturing to the piles of archive material around us. "If the theater’s history holds the key to figuring out this curse, like the books told me, you’ll just have to go through⁠—”

"Just!” I interrupted. "Believe me, I’ve tried, and I’ve barely made a dent. I keep getting interrupted.” I pushed thoughts of Ellie aside before I started crying. "Anyway, I took a few things home, but look at all this—and there’s more in the hidden room still. It’s overwhelming.”

"Then let’s get cracking. Looks like we’re stuck here until DI Farrow is ready to speak with us anyway, so we might as well use the time.
